HB137 Brings More Law Changes For Motorcycle Riders In Florida

Effective on October 1, 2008, HB137 revises traffic laws to create more penalties for motorcycle riders. This law was passed earlier in the year is specifically aimed at motorcycle riders and it carries some heavy penalties.

Broken down into three parts the new violations include:

  • Motorcycle or Moped, wheels loosing contact with the ground
  • Motorcycle or Moped license tag improperly affixed
  • A person who exceeds the speed limit in excess of 50 mph or more
Each one of these new violations carry similar penalties:
  • 1st offense (moving violation)- $1,000 fine plus any other costs associated with the moving violation
  • 2nd offense (moving violation)-  $2,500 fine plus any other costs associated with the moving violation and driver's license revoked for 1 year
  • 3rd offense (third degree felony)-  $5,000 fine, you are charged with a felony and the violators driver's license is revoked for a period of 10 years

In addition to the fines, the violator will have to pay court costs that can reach in excess of several hundred dollars.

So, keep your wheels on the ground, put your tag on correctly and stop trying to break the sound barrier, ok.
