Just In Time For Bike Week: Daytona Police Impose DNA Tests PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 February 2008

Daytona Bike WeekThe Daytona Beach Police department is trying to get a new policy in place that would allow them to DNA test ANYONE who is ARRESTED for ANY CRIME.  Their hope is that this new step may lead them to the murder/rapist who has been plaguing the city for the last couple of years.

DNA tests are currently performed for CONVICTIONS of felonies, but the new policy will open this up to ANYONE who is ARRESTED.

They are also trying to "encourage" other local law enforcement agencies to do the same and so far it appears that Port Orange will soon follow. There have been rumors that the Daytona Beach Police would even be DNA testing those pulled over for traffic violations, but the Police Chief Chitwood maintains those rumors are simply untrue. Chief Chitwood also stated that people could refuse the DNA sample.

More information on the Daytona DNA testing can be found in a recent article published in the Orlando Sentinel http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/volusia/orl-dna0708feb07,0,476106.story.
