Going On A Road Trip? Tips For Your Body

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

If you knew you were going on a long road trip you would give your bike a check-to prevent mechanical problems. But, have you thought about what you should be doing for your body to prepare for your trip? Many Bikers complain about fatigue and pain due to their long trip. As an acupuncturist, I can treat the pain but what I preach is preventative healthcare. It doesn't matter how well balanced your bike is, or how strong a rider you are, fatigue will eventually set in. Just like any sport, you need to prepare your body. These simple exercises will help make you trip a success:

  • Seated Calf Raises: When on a bike, in a seated position, the soleus muscles (located under the calf muscles) are activated. This exercise will help strengthen those muscles. In a seated position, with your knees directly over your ankles at a 90 degree angle, raise your heels slowly for a count of three, and lower them back down for a count of two. Do 3 sets of 12-15 repetitions. For more resistance hold weight on your thigh.
  • Front Arm Raises: When riding, your arms are in a raised position for an extended period of time. This exercise will build up the muscles used when holding the hand grips. With dumbbells in hand, stand with your legs shoulder's width apart. Rest the dumbbells on your thighs with your palms facing your thigh. Slowly raise the weights in front of you keeping your arms slightly bent at the elbow. Raise the weight so that it is no higher than your nose. Then slowly lower the weight to the starting position.
Always remember to stretch your chest muscles and your back before riding.
