honda airbagHonda has announced that their spring release of 2006 Honda Goldwings will include the first airbag available in motorcycles. They have taken their extensive knowledge of airbag systems from the automobile industry and applied it to the motorcycle world, developing a sophisticated indoor testing facility and crash test dummy.

The system is made up of a variety of parts and sensors which instantly deploy the airbag when a crash is occurring. Tests have shown that the airbag can absorb some of the forward energy during a crash and lessen the impact to the rider. This will slow the speed in which the rider is thrown from the motorcycle and/or hits the pavement during a crash. The results indicate this will decrease the severity of injuries a rider will sustain. Anything to help protect a rider is a welcomed invention.
