LoJack has released results from the first Annual Motorcycle Theft study which documents theft recoveries for 2006. LoJack helped law enforcement recover 262 motorcycles valued at 2.8 million dollars and discover 76 professional theft rings that enabled the recovery of an additional 2.1 million stolen bikes, parts and accessories. This totaled more than 4.9 million dollars in stolen motorcycles and parts that were recovered through tracking of LoJack equipped bikes.
With the popularity of motorcycling riding at an all time high, theft rings are booming. Motorcycle thefts increased 135% over the past five years. Florida, California and Texas rank the highest in thefts with sport bikes as the thieves' main target. Four out of five stolen/recovered motorcycles were late model sport bikes. Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Harley Davidson were the top five stolen brands. LoJack has created a "Bike Smarts" guide (available online) to inform motorcycle riders of theft protection. The LoJack motorcycle anti-theft unit retails around $595 plus installation from the dealer. If you want the extra protection there are several dealers in Central Florida that can hook you up.
