Ride Your Bike To Work Day 2006

With gas prices still hovering near the $3.00 per gallon range, it is no wonder we are seeing more and more motorcycles on the roads with the morning commuter traffic. If you find yourself making a conscious effort to leave your daily gas hogs (SUVs, trucks, V8s etc.) at home and opting to take advantage of your two wheeled gas saving rides, you are not alone.

On July 19, 2006 there is a special day created for all the two-wheeled commuters out there- the national Ride To Work Day. To help build awareness of motorcycles in our community, all motorcycle riders are encouraged to ride their bike to work this day. According to Anne Goldfine, the national event organizer, "Riding to work on this day shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. For many people, riding is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits." The goal of Ride to Work Day is to promote more public and government awareness while highlighting the positive value of motorcycle riding.

For the past several years Siemens Power Generation in East Orlando has been encouraging their motorcycle riding employees to participate in Ride To Work Day. Communication about the event is posted in the employee newsletter and promoted through their internal riding club. On Ride To Work Day, all participants are asked to report for an official group photo to commemorate the day. In addition to participating in this event Siemens Power Generation also encourages motorcycle commuting year round by providing designated motorcycle parking and organizing special events/ rides through their 95+ member riding club.
